Océ publishes 2010 Sustainability Report: continued CO2 reductions, more use of renewable energy

Publication in Sustainability Week 2011 underlines company-wide employee engagement and commitment

Venlo, The Netherlands, 21 April 2011 - Océ provides evidence of continuing significant sustainability gains in its 2010 Sustainability Report published today 21 April 2011. Among the 2010 highlights are reductions in CO2 emissions and increased use of renewable energy, as well as a further intensification of employee engagement and commitment in all areas of the organization. Océ also continued its drive to support customers in making their own sustainability choices, benefiting both their operations and the environment.

“Throughout 2010, our ongoing effort to achieve the optimum balance between People, Planet and Profit went further than our own activities as the importance of sustainability became more embedded in the industries we serve”, said Océ CEO Rokus van Iperen.

CO2 emissions 8.3% lower than in 2009

Gains in reducing CO2 emissions totaled 8.3% relative to 2009, and were achieved by increasing the use of renewable energy – which now accounts for 45% of all electricity used by all Océ production sites – and by energy-efficiency initiatives at individual Océ locations around the world. Among these actions were optimizing the operation of air conditioning systems in the Océ Printing Systems data centers; installing more energy-efficient fluorescent lighting at Océ Display Graphics, leading to 40% energy savings; reducing electricity and vehicle fuel consumption in Spain and Portugal through an internal awareness campaign; and optimizing the running time of heating and cooling equipment at Océ UK.

“Greening” of the Océ vehicle fleet

Another contribution to the reduced CO2 emissions was made by a further improvement in the sustainability of the Océ vehicle fleet. For example the number of site visits made by the Océ service organization and the number of vehicle kilometers were reduced by 5% compared with 2009, both achieved mainly by improved processing of service calls. Improvements were also made by numerous local initiatives to increase the efficiency of vehicle use and reduce vehicle kilometers.

Fleet sustainability was also improved by continuing the policy of reducing average vehicle emissions. Océ operating companies are making CO2 emissions a key selection factor as vehicles become due for replacement. Just one example is Océ UK, which replaced more than 100 vehicles in 2010 by new models with CO2 emissions of less than 120 g/km. The Océ organizations in Spain and Portugal have also approved plans to purchase vehicles with emissions of less than 120 g/km for their field service engineers. Overall, the average emissions of Océ’s European lease cars decreased by a further 6% compared with the 2009 figure.

More energy-efficient products

Next to these initiatives in the organization, Océ is also focusing on improving the energy-efficiency of its products, thereby contributing to the achievement by its customers of their own sustainability targets. Among the examples are the Océ Arizona® 550 XT display graphics printer and the Océ ColorWave® 300 multifunction printer. The industry-standard ENERGY STAR® qualification was gained for all eligible products launched in 2010, and now forms part of all new product developments.

Third annual Océ Sustainability Week in 2011

Océ also continued its Corporate Social Responsibility drive in 2010 with numerous initiatives involving Océ employees around the world. For example, the publication of the Océ 2010 Sustainability Report marks the start of the company’s annual Sustainability Week, which is being held for the third time in 2011. Linking up with the Year of the Volunteer in 2011, the theme of this year’s Océ Sustainability Week is “Go Green, Be Social”. This is supported by volunteering activities related to the Océ business areas, as well as a range of awareness and involvement initiatives promoted on the company intranet and in videos, by competitions and through posters and other special communications.

Looking ahead, Océ’s sustainability focus in the coming year will again aim at ensuring the organization continues to improve its sustainable record and protect the interests of its stakeholders, now and in the future. The Océ Sustainability Report aims to build the successful dialogue with stakeholders regarding the sustainability of all aspects of the company’s operations.
